New Test at OLIMP CDL: Cystatin C - A New Perspective on Kidney Function Assessment
CDL OLIMP continues to expand its laboratory diagnostic capabilities and introduces the Cystatin C test, a modern and highly sensitive marker that can detect changes in kidney function even before pronounced clinical manifestations appear.
Cystatin C is a protein continuously produced by almost all cells in the body and eliminated by the kidneys. Due to its stable production and metabolic characteristics, its blood level is considered a reliable indicator of the *glomerular filtration rate (GFR)*, one of the key criteria for assessing kidney function. In certain cases, Cystatin C may help identify kidney dysfunction earlier than traditional markers.
When can Cystatin C testing be useful ?
- for early detection of declining kidney function;
- when chronic kidney disease is suspected;
- for monitoring patients with established kidney diseases;
- in patients with diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension, which are risk factors for kidney damage;
- for a more accurate estimation of glomerular filtration rate;
- in situations where creatinine levels may not reflect the actual state of kidney function.
Advantages of the test
- Helps detect early changes in kidney function.
- Less dependent on age, sex, and muscle mass compared with creatinine.
- Improves the accuracy of glomerular filtration rate assessment.
- Can be used as a standalone marker or in combination with other laboratory tests.
Preparation for testing
Venous blood is used for the analysis.
It is recommended to:
- have the blood sample collected in the morning while fasting or 3–4 hours after a meal;
- avoid intense physical activity during the 24 hours before testing;
- maintain your usual fluid intake;
- inform your physician in advance about any medications you are taking
Important
The test results should be interpreted only in conjunction with clinical findings, medical history, and the results of other laboratory and instrumental examinations. Final interpretation should be performed by the attending physician.
OLIMP CDL continues to implement advanced laboratory technologies, providing patients and healthcare professionals with modern tools for timely diagnosis and effective health monitoring.
