Tuberculosis is a serious disease that can remain hidden for a long time without showing any symptoms. Early diagnosis plays a key role in effective treatment and prevention of the spread of infection.

The QuantiFERON-TB Gold test is a laboratory blood test designed to detect infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Its purpose is to detect the presence of a cellular immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, even if the disease is in its latent stage.

The QuantiFERON test belongs to a group of IGRA tests, which are tests that determine how your immune system responds to tuberculosis bacteria.

When the body encounters Mycobacterium tuberculosis, certain blood cells (T lymphocytes) begin to release a special substance called gamma interferon.

The test measures the amount of this substance in the blood: if there is a lot of it, it may mean that the body is already "familiar" with the infection.

Why is the Quantiferon test performed?

The Quantiferon test is performed to:

  • detect latent (hidden) tuberculosis infection;
  • confirm or rule out a diagnosis of active tuberculosis;
  • diagnosis in risk groups, people with weakened immune systems, healthcare workers who have been in contact with tuberculosis patients;
  • reoperative examination;
  • control of the condition after tuberculosis treatment.

Who needs to be tested?

  • People who have been in contact with tuberculosis patients
  • People with chronic diseases (diabetes, kidney disease, cancer) that weaken the immune system
  • People with frequent respiratory infections without a clear cause

Symptoms

Tuberculosis can be asymptomatic for a long time, so it is important to know its possible signs:

  • prolonged cough (more than 2–3 weeks);
  • weakness, fatigue;
  • weight loss without obvious causes;
  • night sweats;
  • increased body temperature;
  • chest pain;
  • blood spitting (at an advanced stages).
