Parasites are organisms that use the human body as a habitat and a source of nutrients. They include various species of helminths (parasitic worms) and protozoa.

  • Parasitic infections can occur in people of any age.
  • Infection may occur through food, water, soil, animals, or contaminated surfaces.
  • Some parasitic infections may remain asymptomatic for a long time and have no specific clinical signs.
  • The highest risk is observed among children, pet owners, travelers, and people who have frequent contact with soil.
  • A comprehensive laboratory test allows the assessment of antibodies to the most common parasitic infections.

 

Ascariasis

Ascariasis is a parasitic disease caused by the roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides. Humans are the only source of infection, as adult worms live and reproduce in the human intestine. Female worms can produce up to 200,000 eggs per day, which are excreted in the feces and become infectious under favorable environmental conditions.

The disease has two stages:

  • Early (migratory) stage - associated with the migration of larvae through the body;
  • Intestinal stage - when adult worms inhabit the small intestine.

During the early stage, symptoms may include cough, shortness of breath, fever, skin rash, itching, weakness, and other manifestations related to larval migration. During the intestinal stage, abdominal pain, nausea, digestive disturbances, and sleep disorders may occur. However, these symptoms are non-specific and may also be present in other diseases. Therefore, laboratory testing is required to confirm the diagnosis.

 

Echinococcosis

Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Dogs and other members of the canine family are the primary hosts of the parasite. Humans become infected accidentally by ingesting parasite eggs. Once inside the body, the larvae may spread to various organs, where they form hydatid (echinococcal) cysts. The liver and lungs are the organs most commonly affected.

Transmission occurs via the fecal–oral route.

Infection may occur:

  • through contact with infected dogs;
  • via contaminated hands;
  • by eating unwashed vegetables, fruits, and leafy greens;
  • through water or food contaminated with parasite eggs.

 

Giardiasis

Giardiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Giardia lamblia. The parasites primarily affect the duodenum and small intestine, where they actively multiply and may interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption.

Transmission occurs via the fecal–oral route.

Giardia may enter the body:

  • through contaminated water;
  • by eating unwashed vegetables, fruits, and leafy greens;
  • through contaminated hands;
  • through contact with contaminated objects.

 

Opisthorchiasis

Opisthorchiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the flatworm Opisthorchis felineus (the Siberian or cat liver fluke). After entering the human body, the parasite may affect the bile ducts, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas. The primary source of infection is the consumption of insufficiently cooked freshwater fish containing the parasite's larvae.

Infection may occur through consumption of:

  • raw or lightly salted freshwater fish;
  • undercooked or underfried river fish;
  • fish prepared using improper processing techniques.

After entering the body, the parasite larvae migrate to the biliary tract, where they mature into adult worms and begin producing eggs.

 

Toxocariasis

Toxocariasis is a parasitic disease caused by the larvae of the roundworm Toxocara canis. Dogs are the primary hosts of the parasite, with adult worms living in their intestines. Humans become infected accidentally by ingesting Toxocara eggs; however, the parasite does not develop into an adult worm in the human body. Instead, the larvae may migrate through the bloodstream to various organs and tissues, including the liver, lungs, muscles, eyes, and, in rare cases, the brain.

Transmission occurs via the fecal–oral route.

The most common routes of infection include:

  • contact with soil contaminated with parasite eggs;
  • contact with infected dogs;
  • inadequate personal hygiene;
  • consumption of contaminated vegetables, fruits, and leafy greens.

 

Trichinellosis

Trichinellosis is a parasitic disease caused by roundworms of the genus Trichinella. Human infection most commonly occurs after consuming undercooked meat containing the parasite's larvae. Pork and wild boar meat are considered the main sources of infection.

The primary route of transmission is foodborne.

Infection may occur through consumption of:

  • undercooked pork;
  • wild boar meat;
  • meat from other wild animals that has not undergone adequate heat treatment.

In the early stages, the disease may present with symptoms that can easily be mistaken for other infections. Possible manifestations include:

  • fever;
  • swelling of the face and eyelids;
  • muscle pain;
  • general weakness.
