The liver is the main filter of our body, performing functions ranging from blood purification to regulating metabolism.

Signs of potential liver problems:

  • Rapid fatigue and weakness
  • Ochrodermia
  • Heaviness and pain in the right upper abdomen
  • Poor appetite, nausea
  • Changes in urine and fecal matter color

ALTAST

  • An enzyme involved in amino acid metabolism. Elevated levels of ALT/AST indicate liver cell damage, which is characteristic of hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Alkaline phosphatase

  • Involved in the metabolism of phosphorus and calcium. Elevated alkaline phosphatase levels may indicate impaired bile flow, which is commonly seen in cholestasis or bile duct diseases.

Alpha-amylase (diastase)

  • Involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates. Elevated levels may indicate issues with the pancreas, which are related to liver function.

Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT)

  • A marker of biliary engorgement. Elevated GGT levels are commonly seen in cholestasis, alcohol abuse, and the use of certain medications.

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)

  • An enzyme involved in energy metabolism. Its level increases when tissues are damaged, including in conditions like hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Total protein

  • Indicates the total protein content in blood plasma. A decrease in its level may suggest impaired synthetic function of the liver.

Albumin

  • The main plasma protein synthesized by the liver. Low levels are often observed in chronic liver diseases.

Total, direct bilirubin

  • Bilirubin is formed during the breakdown of red blood cells. An elevated level leads to jaundice and indicates impaired liver function. Direct bilirubin is associated with bile flow obstruction and may rise in cases of bile duct blockage.

Main Liver Diseases:

Hepatitis - an inflammatory liver disease caused by viruses, toxins, or autoimmune processes.

Main Types of Hepatitis:

Viral Hepatitis (A, B, C):

Each type is caused by a different virus and is transmitted through different means.

Hepatitis А

  • It is transmitted through contaminated water or food. It usually has an acute course and rarely leads to serious consequences.

Hepatitis В

  • It is transmitted through blood, sexual contact, or from mother to child. It is a serious disease that can progress to a chronic form and lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer..

Hepatitis С

  • The most dangerous hepatitis, transmitted through blood (blood transfusions, unsterile instruments). It often progresses asymptomatically for years, leading to severe liver damage. In most cases, it progresses to a chronic form.

Toxic Hepatitis

  • Caused by the exposure to toxins, such as alcohol, medications, or chemicals.

.

Fatty liver disease (steatosis)

The accumulation of fat in liver cells, often associated with poor diet.

There are two types of steatosis:

  • Alcoholic fatty liver disease - develops due to excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease - associated with metabolic disorders, poor diet, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Fatty liver disease can develop not only due to an unhealthy lifestyle but also as a result of hormonal and metabolic changes in the body.

Liver cirrhosis

A chronic disease in which liver tissues are replaced by connective tissue.
