Some nutrients from animal products are absorbed more easily and quickly.

For example:

  • vitamin B12 is practically absent in plant-based foods;
  • iron from plant sources is absorbed less efficiently than iron from meat;
  • vitamin D is often insufficient due to lifestyle and dietary habits.

Vitamin D

A fat-soluble substance that is converted in the body into active forms and regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism.

With a plant-based diet, the risk of vitamin D deficiency is higher for several reasons:

  • limited dietary sources;
  • absence of fatty fish and liver in the diet;
  • dependence on sunlight synthesis.

When vitamin D levels decrease, the absorption of calcium and phosphorus is impaired. This affects several body systems at once:

  • bone tissue becomes less strong;
  • bone mineralization worsens;
  • muscle strength may decrease.

Vitamin B12

A water-soluble vitamin involved in blood formation, nervous system function, and metabolism. It is essential for the formation and maturation of red blood cells, as well as for the normal metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

The human body cannot synthesize sufficient amounts of vitamin B12 on its own. The main sources are animal-based products:

  • meat;
  • fish;
  • eggs;
  • dairy products;
  • liver.

Vitamin B12 deficiency develops gradually.

Possible signs include:

  • persistent fatigue;
  • weakness;
  • decreased concentration;
  • drowsiness;
  • memory impairment;
  • dizziness.

Calcium

One of the main minerals in the body.

About 99% of calcium is found in bones and teeth, while the remaining amount is present in blood and tissues. It is necessary not only for bone strength, but also for muscle function, nervous system activity, and blood clotting processes.

With a plant-based diet, calcium intake may be insufficient or its absorption may be reduced.

This may be related to several factors:

  • restriction of dairy products;
  • vitamin D deficiency;
  • особенности absorption of minerals from plant-based foods;
  • protein deficiency in the diet.

Total Protein

One of the basic biochemical blood parameters. It reflects the total amount of all serum proteins, primarily albumins and globulins.

Proteins are essential for almost all processes in the body:

  • transport of vitamins and minerals;
  • immune system function;
  • tissue repair;
  • metabolism;
  • maintenance of fluid balance.

Iron

A vital trace element involved in blood formation and helping cells receive oxygen. It is necessary for the synthesis of hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen throughout the body.

The main sources of iron are red meat and liver. With a plant-based diet, the risk of iron deficiency is higher because iron from plant foods is absorbed less efficiently.

When iron levels become insufficient, it becomes more difficult for the body to supply tissues with oxygen.

Possible signs of deficiency include:

  • persistent fatigue;
  • weakness;
  • dizziness;
  • decreased work capacity;
  • shortness of breath during physical activity;
  • pale skin;
  • brittle nails;
  • hair loss.

Ferritin

A protein that serves as the body’s "iron storage". It stores iron and releases it when the body needs it for blood formation and other processes.

With a plant-based diet, iron stores may be depleted more quickly for several reasons:

  • iron from plant foods is absorbed less efficiently;
  • absence of heme iron from meat;
  • deficiency may develop gradually over time.

The test helps assess:

  • whether there is a latent iron deficiency;
  • how depleted the iron stores are;
  • the risk of developing iron deficiency anemia.

Cholesterol

A fat-like substance found in the body’s cells that performs important functions. It is involved in the formation of cell membranes and serves as a precursor for the synthesis of a number of biologically active substances, including hormones, bile acids, and vitamin D.

The test allows to:

  • assess blood cholesterol levels;
  • detect lipid metabolism disorders;
  • evaluate the risk of metabolic disorders..

Cholesterol itself is not harmful. It is necessary for the normal functioning of the body.

It is involved in:

  • formation of cell membranes;
  • hormone synthesis;
  • production of bile acids;
  • synthesis of vitamin D.

Phosphorus

A vital macronutrient present in the body in the form of phosphates. It is the main intracellular anion and participates in the functioning of almost all body systems.

Phosphorus enters the body through food and is found in many products. However, its balance is closely related to other elements, especially calcium and vitamin D.

Phosphorus is involved in key processes:

  • energy metabolism;
  • muscle and nervous system function;
  • cell growth and division;
  • formation of bone tissue;
  • storage and transmission of genetic information.
