Dryness, excessive oiliness, breakouts, and other skin changes may be associated with more than just cosmetics and lifestyle. Hormonal balance, metabolic processes, the body's supply of essential nutrients, and individual characteristics can also affect skin condition.
This examination may be relevant if you notice:
- frequent breakouts and inflammation;
- excessive skin dryness or oiliness;
- persistent changes in skin condition;
- deterioration in your skin's appearance without an obvious cause.
Ferritin
A protein that binds and stores iron in the body. Its concentration in the blood helps assess iron stores and identify a possible deficiency before significant changes appear in a complete blood count.
Iron is essential for the production of hemoglobin, which transports oxygen to tissues and organs. Iron deficiency may cause weakness, fatigue, and reduced work capacity.
TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone)
TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and regulates thyroid function. Under its influence, the thyroid gland produces the hormones T3 and T4, which are involved in metabolism and affect the functioning of various organs and body systems.
TSH levels help assess how well the thyroid gland is functioning. Elevated levels may occur when thyroid activity is reduced (hypothyroidism), while decreased levels may be observed when hormone production is increased (hyperthyroidism). However, TSH results are generally assessed together with free T4 and other indicators, taking the individual's condition into account.
Thyroid function is also associated with skin condition. Thyroid disorders may cause dry skin, changes in skin texture, and other visible symptoms.
Estradiol
An active estrogen hormone belonging to the group of female sex hormones. In women, it is produced primarily by the ovaries and is involved in regulating the reproductive system. Estradiol is also present in small amounts in the male body.
This hormone affects the menstrual cycle, development of the reproductive organs, bone health, and the distribution of subcutaneous fat. In addition, estradiol is involved in regulating metabolic processes and influences skin condition.
Testosterone
A sex hormone belonging to the androgen group, present in both male and female bodies. In men, it is produced primarily in the testes, while in women it is produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands. Testosterone levels are significantly higher in men.
Testosterone affects the activity of the sebaceous glands and the production of sebum. Increased androgen activity may make the skin oilier, while excessive sebum production can contribute to clogged pores and acne. Androgens are also involved in regulating hair growth.
DHEA-S (Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate)
A steroid hormone produced primarily by the adrenal cortex.
DHEA-S has weak androgenic activity but can be converted into more active androgens in tissues, including the skin. These hormones stimulate the activity of the sebaceous glands and sebum production. Increased androgen activity may make the skin oilier, while excess sebum can contribute to clogged pores and acne.
IgE (Immunoglobulin E)
An antibody involved in immune system function and the development of allergic reactions.
Upon contact with an allergen, IgE triggers a cascade of immune reactions, resulting in the release of histamine and other biologically active substances. This may cause skin manifestations of allergies, including itching, redness, rashes, and hives.
A total IgE test helps assess the presence of allergic activity in the body. However, an elevated level does not identify a specific allergen and does not, on its own, confirm an allergy.
Glycated Hemoglobin
A compound formed when glucose binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. Its level reflects the average blood glucose concentration over approximately the previous 2–3 months.
Elevated blood glucose levels may affect skin condition. With prolonged hyperglycemia, tissue repair processes may slow down, the skin may become drier, and wounds may take longer to heal. Elevated blood sugar is also associated with changes in immune system function, which may increase susceptibility to certain skin infections.
Total Protein
The combined amount of different proteins in blood plasma. Albumin and globulins make up the majority of these proteins.
Proteins are essential for tissue renewal and repair, including that of the skin. They are involved in the formation of cellular structures and the maintenance of normal regeneration processes. In cases of significant protein deficiency, the body may be less effective at repairing damaged tissues, and the skin may become more vulnerable to injury.
