Hair and nails can respond to changes in the body. Possible contributing factors include:
- deficiencies in vitamins and minerals;
- metabolic disorders;
- changes in hormonal balance;
- insufficient intake of nutrients;
- inflammatory processes and other health conditions.
Vitamin D
A fat-soluble vitamin involved in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, supporting the immune system, and regulating cell renewal processes. It also affects the function of hair follicles - skin structures from which hair grows.
Vitamin D is involved in regulating the hair follicle life cycle, including hair growth and renewal. For nails, vitamin D is important primarily because of its role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism and in supporting normal cell renewal processes.
Vitamin B12
A water-soluble vitamin involved in DNA synthesis, cell division, and red blood cell production.
Vitamin B12 participates in cell renewal processes, so its deficiency may affect tissues that are constantly being renewed. Changes in hair and nails have been described in cases of vitamin B12 deficiency, including increased hair loss and pigmentation disorders.
Folic Acid
A water-soluble form of vitamin B9. It is involved in DNA synthesis, cell division, and red blood cell production.
Vitamin B9 participates in cell division processes required for hair growth and nail plate formation. A significant deficiency may disrupt normal cell renewal and can also lead to anemia. This may affect the overall condition of hair and nails.
Ferritin
A protein that binds and stores iron in the body. Its concentration in the blood helps assess iron stores and identify a possible deficiency.
Iron is involved in cellular metabolic processes and is essential for the normal functioning of hair follicles. Iron deficiency may disrupt the hair growth cycle, sometimes resulting in increased hair loss and thinning. Iron deficiency can also cause nail changes: nails may become more brittle and, in some cases, develop a concave shape.
Total Calcium
One of the body's essential minerals. Approximately 99% of the total amount of calcium in the body is found in bones and teeth. It helps maintain their strength and is involved in muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and the regulation of cell function.
Calcium participates in cell division and cellular function, including the processes that support tissue renewal. However, its direct role in hair growth and nail strength is limited.
TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone)
TSH regulates thyroid function and the production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which are involved in metabolism, cell growth, and renewal.
Thyroid hormones participate in regulating the life cycle of hair follicles. When thyroid function is reduced (hypothyroidism), hair may become dry, coarse, and brittle, and increased hair loss may occur. When thyroid function is increased (hyperthyroidism), hair may become thinner and finer.
C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
A protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation. Its concentration in the blood may increase due to infections, tissue damage, and other inflammatory processes. The test helps assess the presence and severity of the inflammatory response in the body.
Inflammatory processes and conditions associated with elevated CRP levels may affect the condition of hair and nails. For example, a high fever, severe infection, or significant physical stress can disrupt the hair growth cycle and trigger increased hair loss some time later.
Iron
An essential trace element involved in hemoglobin production and the transport of oxygen to tissues and organs.
Iron is necessary for the normal functioning of hair follicles and for maintaining the hair growth cycle. Iron deficiency may cause hair to become thinner and increase hair loss. Iron deficiency can also affect nail condition, making nails more brittle.
Cortisol
A steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex. It helps the body adapt to physical and emotional stress, regulates metabolism, blood glucose levels, and inflammatory responses.
Cortisol is involved in regulating hair follicle function. Prolonged exposure to stress and changes in hormonal regulation may disrupt the hair growth cycle. As a result, some hair follicles may enter the resting phase prematurely, which can lead to increased hair loss. This condition is known as telogen effluvium.
DHEA-S (Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate)
A steroid hormone produced primarily by the adrenal cortex.
After being converted into active androgens, these hormonal compounds may affect hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Increased androgen activity may lead to increased hair growth on the face and body, as well as increased sebum production. Androgens are also involved in regulating scalp hair growth, but their effects depend on the individual sensitivity of hair follicles.
