TSH
A hormone produced by the pituitary gland, a part of the brain that regulates the endocrine system. Its main function is to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce the hormones T4 and T3.
TSH is related to free T4 levels: there is an inverse relationship between these parameters. Therefore, for a more comprehensive assessment of thyroid function, TSH is often evaluated together with free T4.
Free T4
The portion of thyroxine that is not bound to blood proteins. The free form is available to tissues and reflects the level of the hormone produced by the thyroid gland.
The test helps assess thyroid function and identify possible abnormalities in its activity. The results are usually considered together with TSH because these parameters are interconnected through the hormonal regulatory system.
Free T3
One of the main thyroid hormones. In the blood, it is present in both bound and free forms. Free T3 is not bound to proteins and represents the active form of the hormone that can act on the body's tissues.
Triiodothyronine is involved in the regulation of metabolism and affects the functioning of various organs and systems. Its level may change in thyroid dysfunction.
Anti-TPO
Antibodies to thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme in thyroid cells that is involved in the production of thyroid hormones. Elevated levels of these antibodies may be associated with autoimmune processes in which the immune system reacts against the thyroid gland's own tissues.
Anti-TPO testing helps a physician assess the likelihood of autoimmune thyroid disease. The test may be used in the diagnosis of, in particular, Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis and Graves' disease, as well as in assessing the causes of thyroid dysfunction.
Anti-Tg
Antibodies to thyroglobulin, a protein involved in the production and storage of thyroid hormones. Elevated levels of these antibodies may be associated with autoimmune processes in the thyroid gland.
The test provides additional information when assessing thyroid diseases, including those of autoimmune origin. Anti-Tg testing may be used together with other parameters to clarify the cause of changes in thyroid function.
