One of the most common tree pollens found in Central and Northern Europe is birch pollen from the Betulaceae family. It is one of the most common tree species in Europe, producing a pollen allergen. It grows best in temperate climates with light, fertile and acidic soil. It belongs to the order Fagles and the family Betulaceae.

Birch pollen is one of the main causes of asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and symptoms of allergic rhinitis. The molecular biochemical characterization of birch revealed 7 allergen components, including the main allergen Bet v 1 and minor allergens Bet v 2, Bet v 3, Bet v 4, Bet v 6, Bet v 7, Bet v 8, which can bind to immunoglobulin E (IgE). Among them, Bet v 1 is a key allergen of the hanging birch, which causes a specific IgE reaction in about 90% of sensitized individuals. Approximately 70% of patients with birch pollen allergy, up to 70% of them, due to cross-IgE reactivity with food allergen sources such as almonds, apples, carrots, etc., experience hypersensitivity reactions. The birch pollen allergen exhibits cross-reactivity with homologues of the birch group (alder, oak hornbeam, chestnut and beech) and homologues of Bet v 1 plant allergens. Currently, allergen immunotherapy is the safest way of therapy.
