Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus belongs to a group of mites originally found in house dust. These house mites, which include both house dust mites and accumulation mites, contain species that are highly allergenic. Atopic reactivity to their products is one of the most frequent causes of allergic disease worldwide, affecting the upper and lower respiratory tract, eyes, skin, less commonly the gastrointestinal tract and subsequent systemic exposure causing anaphylaxis.
