An overdose of folic acid during pregnancy leads to the birth of sick children
Everyone knows that folic acid (vitamin B9) has an important effect on the development of pregnancy: it reduces the risk of miscarriages, premature birth, and postpartum bleeding.
She is an integral participant in the formation of vital systems and organs of the unborn child. At the same time, an overdose of folic acid during pregnancy is no less dangerous than its deficiency and leads to the birth of sick children, this is reported by employees of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA. The scientific analysis abstracts confirming this fact were published in the proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology; News Orleans, Louisiana, USA: February 26–March 2, 2010, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in the period from February 26 to March 2, 2010. In the course of scientific research conducted in Norway, information was collected on 1962 mothers and their children. Norway was chosen because dietary supplements in this country are not fortified, which provided an excellent opportunity to clarify the problem of consuming large amounts of vitamin B9 during pregnancy. The research team studied the blood tests of women in the second trimester of pregnancy. It was found that children prone to asthma are most often born in women with elevated levels of folic acid in their blood plasma during pregnancy. Babies whose mothers consumed too much folic acid suffered from asthma almost one and a half times more often than the rest. As a result, a direct link was established between the development of asthma in children under the age of three and a significant content of vitamin B9 in blood plasma during pregnancy of their mothers. In addition, it was found that the use of folic supplements during pregnancy increases the risk of developing respiratory diseases in infants born up to 18 months.
