Parathormone

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone of the perithyroid gland. The level of PTH is directly related to the level of calcium - the less calcium, the more PTH is produced and vice versa. Such dependence is due to the main function of the hormone - to regulate the concentration of calcium.

If the level of this vital trace element decreases, parathormone activates special cells of the bone structure - osteoclasts, which destroy bone tissue, due to which "released" calcium enters the blood. It also increases calcium absorption in the intestine and reduces excretion through the kidneys.

Decreased calcium concentration and increased parathormone is an important link in the development of osteoporosis. This disease is characterized by a decrease in bone density and, as a consequence, their deformation and increased tendency to fractures.
