Iodine (I) in urine (chromatography)

Iodine is a trace mineral constituent of thyroid hormones. This test is applied to test the a trace element  balance in the body.  Production of thyroid hormones is insufficient during iodine deficiency bringing many consequences (goiter, hypothyroidism, developmental delay, impaired reproduction).  Iodine is mainly excreted from the body by kidneys (70–90%), therefore, iodine excretion in the urine correlates with iodine supply. Iodine concentration in urine adequately indicates its consumption.  Iodine concentration in the spot urine well correlates with iodine rate in daily urine. Urine test is convenient comparing to blood test, especially in pediatric practice, as well as when repeated tests are necessary. Excess iodine can cause both hypothyroidism ( thyroid hormone decrease) with or without nodules in the thyroid gland, and hyperthyroidism (thyroid hormones increase)
